type='text'>Yard Sales

Yesterday we got up early to head to a town-wide yard sale. When we got there we saw some people standing in the road handing out something. Maps to (most of) the yard sales in town! How nice that was! DH made a game of it, as he does with most stuff, and wheeled us around to view the goodies everyone was selling. I am not into baby stuff right now, so if it looked mostly pink or blue we passed it by. We stopped at an interesting looking sale-lots of ephemera. As I looked through the tons of linens, sewing items and dishes, I found two small snowflake-looking pieces of tatting. If you know handiworks at all, you know tatting is made with thin cotton thread expertly tied with thousands of little knots that somewhat resemble crochet. It is a form of lace that for some reason really strikes a nostalgic chord in my heart. I am not a tatter nor an expert crocheter, although I like to piddle with making basic stuff now and then. I can appreciate the time and effort it took to make those beautiful pieces. And at 10 cents apiece, who could pass THAT up????
I also spied two wooden cheese boxes full of pens and pencils, erasers and shoestrings. They marked them $1 each. I scooped those up too. I also have a weakness for old wooden things. Today I sorted through the boxes and found a plastic coin that was interesting. On one side it says: 100% less accidents with 2-B SHUR BIRTH CONTROL "PILL". On the back side it says: Use externally only. When romantic situations get beyond control, place 2-B SHUR under left knee and hold firmly in place with right knee. Caution: Excessive use can cause callouses on right knee cap.
What a HOOT !
I also found a type of fountain pen that has a reservoir tube inside the barrel of the pen. I am going to see if I can find a replacement so I can USE it ! HOW FUN!

The rest of the sales were not as interesting, but a fun day we had.

Happy Holidays

I hope your holiday was wonderful, as mine was. DH and I went to his dad's Christmas Eve and then to my mom's to spend Christmas Day with her and my brother.
I ate too much, received too many gifts and laughed constantly ! (Sofa King----sorry, inside joke)
Despite DH's layoff, we enjoyed Christmas. Ü

Next holiday, New Year's Eve. We will probably just enjoy it in the comfort of our home, quietly. Probably we will hit the hay well before midnight. Why is it so much more important when you are younger to celebrate the changing year? I'm not THAT old, but it just doesn't seem as appealing to go out in a smoke filled, crowded venue and drink too many drinks and stay up way too late only to wake up mid-afternoon the next day feeling like you've been hit by a Mack truck........ Not my kind of celebration. Sorry.

Call me a wet blanket.....call me a Negative Nancy......whatever.

Maybe I can think of some "goals" for 2009.

1. Think positively, speak positively, live positively
2. see #1

(I thought 2 goals looked better than just one anyway.)

I finally have begun reading the Twilight series......OMG, I'm halfway finished with the first book and I just started last night !
I don't know what it is about that book, but it's hard to put down---it MAKES you want to read it. It's hard to explain. Read it if you want to know.

Adios 2008-----glad you're through with us.
On to 2009-----please be kind to us !!!

Lori

It's been a long, long road....

I'm sorry I have been neglecting you for so long. Friday we hung the cabinets, given to us by DH's mom (THANKS NANCY !!!). She remodeled their store and gave us the used cabinets--which look almost like our kitchen cabinets!

I love how they look on my Old Olive walls!

Saturday I loaded the room (with most of my stuff) and today I'm still working on organizing it. It's hard to decide where you want everything. I tried to think of the things I use alot and put them close at hand. I still want to hang my ink pads and punches so they're not taking up space on the counter. I want to reorganize my papers to vertical storage but I haven't found the right containers yet. So for now, the 12X12's are still in pizza boxes and the 8 1/2X11's are in paper trays. I want to spray paint my ink pad holder (wooden casette tape holder) and my ribbon and other jar lids white so they all match my other containers. I also want to velcro a white curtain to my lower corner cabinet. It had a wonky door so we just took it off. The toe kicks will be covered (the cabinets had slight water damage due to an overflowing dishwasher!). I did alot of "research" on colors--OK, OK, I just looked at all the postings of stamp rooms on SCS and Two Peas. Even though my favorite color is PINK, I didn't think I'd want pink walls. I decided that the rooms that had green colored walls were the ones I thought looked cozy. The color I chose is a cross between Old Olive and Certainly Celery. It's called "Sea Green" by Kilz (at Walmart). The pics show before, during (while painting the primer white color) and the first coat of the finished product.

Next step is installing the cabinets we got from DH's mom. Long story, the cabinets are used but are in good enough shape to use in my stamp room.

I am trying to decide on a name to call my room. I don't do scrapbooking, just rubber stamping/papercrafting. We thought about just calling it the "Green Room" but that's just too boring, I think. I don't know why I want to name my special room, but I do. I'm a bit odd, I know! Ü

Any cool ideas?????

Wishing you Inspiration,

Lori

Color Challenge #11 !!

I decided to make two cards since they were so small. Both are 3 1/2" X 3 1/2" So Saffron cards. On the square one I punched 3 squares, Versamarked the stars and swirls on all 3 squares and mounted them on white with pop dots to lift them up off the paper. I used black ink stamped off once and then stamped "hello". (I do not have anything gray so this was my feeble attempt.)

Cardstock: SU So Saffron, Old Olive, Whisper White, Rose Red

Stamps: Great Impressions, stars and swirls; Inkadinkado, sentiment

Ink: Versamark, SU Basic Black

Other: Pop Dots, SU Snail

The circle design card was stamped 3 times in 3 different colors of ink. I hope you are enjoying your weekend. It's pretty muggy outside, so I will be a cool cucumber inside. Ü

I decided to make a super simple card for the #10 challenge at Kristina Werner's blog.

To the right you can see the inspiration she chose for this week . The colors are: Old Olive, Bashful Blue, Whisper White, So Saffron and Not Quite Navy.

I made waves with the navy color and for the clouds I used a flower from the Die Cut Blooms kit. The squares were punched out with a paper punch and I added the letters from American Crafts Thickers. I wrote the word "have" above the letter F with just a black ink pen because my Gelly Roll pen would not work no matter how much I scribbled with it ! Ü --Any ideas how I could get it to work?

Wishing you Inspiration, Lori

Azalea Path and Arboretum & My Card

Today we visited the new arboretum near here. It was simply beautiful. Winding paths took us to see two small lakes, a waterfall, numerous wood carvings made from trees that were downed by a tornado, beautiful rose bushes, clematis, lots of different trees, small wildlife and of course lots of beautiful blooming azaleas.

I am sharing some of the pictures I took while we strolled through this lovely nature park.

After we arrived home, I decided to make cupcakes. I used a yellow cake mix, added chocolate chips and iced them with whipped chocolate icing. Unfortunately, the chocolate chips sunk to the bottom of the cupcakes, but they still taste good.

Also I will show you the card I made for my first Inspiration Idea--RED, WHITE and BLUE.

Enjoy your Memorial Day!

Wishing you Inspiration,

Lori

Inspiration Idea #1

For my some of the challenges, I may chose not to put limits on the choices. I will choose a picture that catches my eye and present it to you. It's your turn to make your own choices of how you want to interperet the picture to create your artwork. For example, if you see a shape say, on a wall in the picture and you want to make a card with just those shapes, GO FOR IT! If you like the color combinations in the picture, feel free to use those colors.

Other challenges I may have stipulations on. After looking at SCS's gallery pics of the Tart & Tangy set, I decided to use the orange shape to stamp lemons, limes and oranges to use on a card. (I even saw one stamped in pink to represent pink grapefruit....COOL, huh?!?! I chose pumpkin pie, green galore and yoyo yellow as my colors. I made two versions of the same idea to see which one I liked better. Which one do you vote for??

I thought I could use them for a get well card, to remind the sick person to take their vitamin C......or to give to my friend (who is on Weight Watchers with me) to remind her to eat her fruits. I could also use these cards as a summertime "thinking of you" card.

Really, this set is very versatile and is sure to become a classic stamp set in my collection.

Basketweave

Hi all ! Today's card was inspired by Kristina Werner's Make a Card Monday for today. She has a tutorial on how she made it on her website under the card.

http://kwernerdesign.com/

She used ribbon to weave her embellishment. It was such a cool idea, so I thought I'd try too !

I thought it turned out pretty cute. It was hard to weave all those ribbons and get them onto the square card though!

Enjoy!

Puppy Love

Today I was in my "studio"....I quoted the word 'studio' because it really doesn't look much like one--it's a TOTAL disaster area. I am in the process of cleaning it up and fixing it up-taking all my artsy bits and pieces out, painting the walls, putting in used cabinets (given to us by DH's mom), reorganizing everything into it's logical area, and finally calling it my "studio". I have realized this might take awhile, but I know it will be well worth the effort.

Anyway, as I was saying, I was in my studio and since I have puppy on the brain, I made a "Thanks a bunch" card using a cute Art Gone Wild Puppy Basket stamp I got last weekend. The sentiment is from Penny Black. I think it turned out quite cute! It sure has been awhile since I last talked to you. I will update you with what's been goin' on here in my lil part of the world.

My wonderful hubby and I spent Christmas 2007 as usual by going to his dad and mom's houses for Christmas eve. We have to travel about 3 hours north of here to see them and the rest of the family. While we were at his mom's, someone backed into our car! =( Noone "knew" who did it or what had happened. This made hubby quite angry. We had to call the police and report it, etc. When we got estimates, the damage came to the tune of $1600! Of course we have a $500 deductible that we're probably going to have to pay----all because NOONE KNEW who did it.

We spent Christmas day with my mom and brother. We had a blast ! We played games and had some wine. Of course we ate TONS of food---mom had made veggie pizza, ham, hash brown casserole, broccoli/cauliflower salad, dips, dressing, hickory nut cake, icebox cookies.......YUM!

We stayed up until 4am opening some presents and talking.....

The day after Christmas we did the shopping thing as usual, stocking up on wrapping paper, boxes, bags, cards, etc. Yes, I bought my cards but they look like background paper so I plan on altering them for next year.

The rest of our week off we worked on our kitchen. We are remodeling, and unfortunately we had to start with the kitchen. When we bought the house, we tore out the few cabinets they did have. Then our air conditioning unit went out. SO, we spent our hard earned dollars on that instead of putting it towards our kitchen cabinets. Needless to say we haven't been doing much cooking since we moved in.

BUT, I have attached some pics of what it looks like as of now. It is coming along nicely. We have put in new drywall, painted the walls and ceiling and have almost all the upper cabinets installed....BY OURSELVES! We are quite proud since this is the first remodeling of any kind that we have done. =)

That will bring you to this weekend, where we are planning on working some more in the kitchen. I'll keep you posted!

Wishing you inspiration,

Lori

Some things I've been working on......

Here are pics of 2 cards and a CD ornament I made today.

______________________________________________

First off, I'd like to wish everyone a (belated) HAPPY WORLD CARD MAKING DAY !!!!

My sweet hubby took me to the town we lived in 7ish years ago. We visited a GREAT scrapbooking/craft store called Daisy Lane. http://www.daisy-lane.com/

I bought lots of May Arts ribbons--LOVE those! Also I got a stamp set by See D's called Chai Latte. The coffee in the take out cup reminded me of one of my favorites--Starbuck's, so I bought it! I also got a grab bag of stuff worth $100 for $10. It has lots of everything in there, 12X12 paper, stickers, frames, a magazine, a rubber stamp.....

We had fun visiting our old town.

Exciting Saturday Evening

I spent Saturday afternoon shopping to alleviate my disappointment about my upcoming World Card Making Day event. I advertised 3 days in the local paper and I even had a short spoof in the Business section. NOONE CALLED OR EMAILED to register to attend. My own mother isn't even coming.
SO, as I said, I spent the whole afternoon in Retail Therapy. I found some cool rub-ons at Big Lots (Making Memories) and some heidi grace designs "Pocket Scraps" cardstock stickers. I went to a couple thrift stores and also to Super Wal-Mart. I had lunch by myself at Fazoli's, on the phone with my hubby who was visiting his dad in the hospital. (Nothing major, just a small infection)
After Wal-Mart, it was about 5:30ish and I decided to head for home. BUT, I had to make a stop at Starbuck's first and then start my way. Oh how I love Starbuck's Caramel Frapp's with chocolate chips added....MMMMMM......

As I got onto the highway and headed south, I saw a sight that I had no idea I would be seeing this evening. A farm truck, loaded with soybeans, overturned on the road in front of me. Dust was rising into the air. I slowed down and pulled over to the side. I jumped out of my car and ran up to the truck, laying on it's side. As I am running, I am thinking, "I can't believe I'm doing this." But something made me get out of the car. I know CPR and First Aid. We have to take the class every year for work. Maybe that was the reason. I couldn't just sit there and not attempt to help.

Maybe it was a way of getting me out of my funk and realize there are more important things than being disappointed about a silly cardmaking event. Helping others who may need me is more important. Life is important. Being a compassionate person is important.

As I got to the truck, I saw a young boy sitting on the top, outside of the cab. The father was getting out of the truck through the passenger side window and grandpa was in the driver's seat, unable to get out. I repeatedly asked if everyone was OK. Luckily, noone was hurt, but grandpa sat in the cab behind the wheel, and was looking out through the unbroken windshield at me. He was moving and talking. Other people ran up to the truck and someone called 911. The dad and son got down from the truck and I took the son over to the side of the road and sat on the guard rail with him. He was as white as a ghost. All this went on in about 2 minutes.

There was a nurse who ran up and asked if everyone was OK. She sat down with Mitchell and I. We both asked him questions to make sure he was alert. The fire department pulled up and they started examining. Dad was on the phone, grandpa was still doing OK in the truck. The ambulances pulled up. Police pulled up. The fire department busted out the front windshield and used the "Jaws of Life" to open up the cab of the truck and get grandpa out. Everyone was busily working and examining. (It's amazing how everyone knows exactly what to do and in what order.) Organized chaos, I guess.
Dad's BP was elevated and was advised to go to the hospital, along with Mitchell. His shoulder was sore from Dad landing on him during the accident. Mom arrived and took them to the hospital. The extrication was complete and grandpa was free. He walked, assisted by the paramedics to the stretcher. He was wheeled to the ambulance and driven to the hospital.

All this took about an hour. Maybe longer. It seemed like an instant.

Thank God everyone was going to be OK.

Thank God for putting things in perspective.

Wishing you inspiration (in many ways),

Lori

Goofy Names and Schedule

I saw this on a few blogs and I thought it would be fun to see what my names would be:

1. I had so much fun at regionals with my friends Judy and Becky ! We laughed and talked and shared ideas. We arrived in Louisville and found the Archiver's. Who knew it would be IN Oxmoor Mall????????? Heeheee It was Becky's first time in an Archiver's and I think she liked it. I would bet it won't be her last. (I think she secretly wanted a pic of herself in front of the store, but declined when I asked if I could take her pic.) Judy and I were old pro's so we knew what we were in for. Gotta love Archiver's !

When we got to the convention center on Saturday we swapped our card fronts like crazy. Most of the ladies had swaps made to share. I heard there were somewhere in the neighborhood of 500+ gals there. I made 60 swaps and got them all swapped before the doors opened for us to go in and get our seats. If I knew it would be that much fun to swap, I definitely would have made more! We sat with some great gals and had lots of fun with them. (HI Ashley, Erica, Janet and Melanye!!!)

SU had TONS of ideas for us to see (and do). We made a 12X12 scrapbook page, a 6X6 scrapbook page, 3 "different opening" cards and one "regular opening" card.

The buzz word they kept using was GINORMOUS, pronounced ji-normous. I guess it's a cross between gigantic and enormous. It was funny to hear them say it throughout their demonstrations. My favorite "celeb" was Jaron. He made some VERY cute cards and decorations. I especially liked his Liberace Santa with all the Dazzling Diamonds. Ü I took lots of notes and made lots of sketches in the notebook that was in our pack. We also got a free stamp set (So Much), a lanyard for our nametags, an SU pen and the make-n-takes.

Would you believe I have a list of supplies I NEED now? LOL

I think I got my money's worth from it. I don't know that I will go to another one if it is near and/or I'm still a demo, but this was was definitely FUN and INSPIRING !!!!!

The group pic is from left to right starting in the front row: Becky, me (with my "see into the future glasses"), Janet....second row: Judy, Ashley, Erica and Melanye. The pic with the 3 gals are Judy, Becky and I.

Today I worked on some cute little composition books I got at the Family Dollar. I CASEd the idea from AnnMarie http://annmariesstampingadventures.blogspot.com/. Basically you just Mod Podge papers to the front and back cover and seal it with Mod Podge. I attached ribbon to the cover and cut it long enough so you can keep your place inside the notebook. I also stamped each gal's initial and added it to the cover. The one with the "K" is for my mom. Hers is made with retired SU designer paper. I just LOVE that set of papers. The other two are for the gals I'm going to the Louisville Regional with-one is for my upline and one is for my sideline. Those two are made with the Creepy Crawly designer paper. I don't think they know my blog yet. (I hope) I also made matching pens to go with the notebooks. I didn't get a pic of the pens, but they were made with the RSVP brand pens.

I STILL have a bunch of card fronts I NEED to make for next weekend's Regional. I have 30 made already, but I wanted to use a different layout idea for the others. I'm not sure about how many of the other ones I should make. At these Regionals, gals make bunches of card fronts and swap with other gals. This way, you have TONS of different ideas and stamp sets to show at your workshops.

Enjoy the rest of your Labor Day weekend !

Wishing you inspiration,

Lori

Fun Mail and Busy Gal

This has kept me busy most of the evening. I have been pairing up 79 gals who would like to get more than bills in the mail. I'm calling it our "Stampin Pals" group. It's much like Pen Pals (remember those when we were young?) where you get to know that other person you've been paired up with. Only this way we already have one thing in common: STAMPING !!!!!! I CASED this idea from a post I saw on Splitcoast Stampers and thought it would be fun to be paired up with someone who enjoys stamping as much as you do. So I opened my big mouth on the demonstrator's side of SCS and I got this wave of gals who would like to get FUN mail ! 79 of us so far!!! I am just amazed at the response I got. Anita aka "greetingstoinvites" (on SCS) offered to help me get everyone's info on an Excel spreadsheet. She did a WONDERFUL job! KUDOS TO YOU ANITA !!!!!!!!! So tonight I paired up everyone and posted the pairs. We will be either PM'ing or emailing everyone's info SOON! I can't wait to see pics of what has been created !

Speaking of creating something, I got this RAK in the mail today. It was from "istamp31". It is SO pretty!!! I just love the quote, " Within your heart keep one, still, secret spot where dreams may go." ~Louise Driscoll I love that quote. I wonder where she got the stamp?????? Here is a pic of what she created.

Enjoy your evening!

Wishing you inspiration,

Lori

What Inspires You ?

I'll have to admit, sometimes there are LONG periods of time where I don't feel the least bit creative. LOOOOOONG periods. So usually to remedy this I visit a few new blogs that I haven't seen before. I may check out someone's blogroll with names I've never seen before. This week I've discovered there are cool ways to jump start your creativity by using a deck of cards. WHAT?!?! Yeah, there are challenges on websites where people are given a word a day and have to use a card from the deck (to collage onto) and express their "take" on that word. Amazing! You can buy a brand new deck of cards at the dollar store, sometimes 2 per pack for a buck! Check out this gal's blog: http://eliseblaha.typepad.com/cardart/

Here's a quote from another card sight I found: "A simple deck of cards, turned into art, one day at a time. A visual diary of 52 days of my life. A reason to do something creative every single day."

I think I may try this. They save theirs in those baseball card binders. KWIM?

So what is your main source of inspiration? Blogs? Challenges? An idea just pops in your head and you hurry to sketch it so you don't forget it?

Thanks for reading.

Wishing you inspiration,
Lori

Here's my Santa cards

I wanted to let the puffy paint get totally dry before I tried to put them on cards. So here are my results. I outlined both Santa's in Tempting Turquoise watercolor (to make them look cold) and added cardstock matting behind both in Soft Sky (In Colors). I used Rose Red as background color and both of the cards were made in Gable Green. On one card I used Lil' Davis ribbon (striped lime and red) and the other card was an Offray Sheerly Yours White see-thru type ribbon. I stamped Very Merry from the Holiday Tag Team set in Blue Bayou on one of the cards.

I am so looking forward to getting some Stampin' Pals on SCS. If you are a demo, you can join in on the fun too ! It's like Pen Pals but we get to know our pals AND send stamped and altered things to each other! We are just now getting everyone's info together and soon we will be posting our pals. You can join at any time and if you would like to add another pal to your list, let me know.
Thanks for checking in and have a GREAT Monday evening!

Wishing you inspiration,
Lori

Homemade Puffy Paint

Today I was feelin' in the Christmas spirit. Somewhat. SO, I decided to play around with Santa. Get your mind out of the gutter !!!!

I STAMPED Santa from the Holiday Tag Team set and watercolored him with Real Red and Green Galore. BUT, I made him pinkish and lime greenish.

OH HOW I LOVE THOSE TWO COLORS TOGETHER !!! I don't know why, but I do. (Isn't that a song?)

Anyway, after watercoloring him I wanted to use something different (for me) on his beard and environment. I didn't have any Liquid Applique or Puffy Paint, so I made my own.

Here's the complicated recipe:

Plain old shaving cream

Elmer's glue

Mix about equal parts of each and apply to your project.

THAT'S IT !!! Let it dry and you can push on it and it "shouldn't" cave in. It should bounce back. Cool, huh? Ü

Sorry the pic is a bit blurry.....my camera is an older model digi.

Have a great Monday and I'll meet you back here SOON !

Wishing you inspiration,

Lori aka paperchick

Post-it Purses

Today I made a few of these Post-it Purses from bookmarks. I stamped the small leaf from the Basket Full of Fun set in Old Olive and Pumpkin Pie. I used Q-tips dipped in the stamp pad ink to softly swirl colors on the leaves. I scored and folded the bookmark at 1 1/2", 2", 3 3/4" and 4 1/4" intervals. I used glue dots on the back of the mini post-it pads and put them in place. I added Pumpkin Pie ribbon for the handle and punched holes using the Double Rectangle punch and made a "bow" for the front. I watercolored Old Olive leaves on a separate bookmark and cut out and attached to front of purse. I used a small square of velcro to keep the purse closed.

Work, work, work

Well this is what my desk looked like earlier tonight. What a mess !

I was working on some swaps for the upcoming Stampin' UP! Louisville Regionals. I was thinking autumnal colors and since I got a Scallop Circle Punch from SU, I thought of sunflowers. So they became the focal point of my card fronts.

Here is one of the 30 finished products. I don't know if you can see it or not, but the middle of the sunflower has been Versamark'ed with one of the Itty Bitty Background stamps and then run through the crimper twice to make the crimping criss-crossed. The Old Olive strip was distressed around the edges with the Old Olive Classic stamp pad and Q-tips.

I used:

Cardstock-Chocolate Chip, Old Olive, Pumpkin Pie and Summer Sun

Stamps-Itty Bitty Backgrounds, Greetings Galore (leaf), and Best Friends Alphabet Lower

Embellishments-Old Olive 5/8" Grosgrain Ribbon (for sunflower leaf)

Tools used-Scallop Circle Punch, 1 1/4" Circle Punch, Small Tag Punch, paper crimper

So, is this card "swappable"??????? Your opinions matter!

Thank you,

Lori

Hello fellow papercrafters !

Hello and welcome to my blog, "Playin' With Paper!
